Favorite Sweater

Last week, I decided to shop at H&M instead of taking a lunch. I picked an excellent day: sale! Can you believe I scored this sweater for $12.95? It has become an instant favorite. I found a number of other staple pieces, and all together, everything cost less than one ill-fitting shirt I had just returned. Major win.

Shop this outfit:

Black turtleneck sweater: H&M // Faux leather mini: H&M (in-store, similar in leather) // Off-white pea coat: Express, old (similar from Banana Republic) // Tote: Coach // Ballet flats: Sole Society // Sunglasses: Dior // Stud earrings: Target // Pavé link bracelet: BaubleBar // Black gem bracelet: Target // Men’s watch: Invicta

Speaking of purchasing power: Better World Shopper is a neat iPhone app and book I discovered in college thanks to a great professor. I have starting using the app again to assess my purchases and the impact they have on the world around me. Stores and brands are graded on a letter scale, and I have set my limit for new purchases at a “C.” H&M clothing gets a “B-,” so I feel alright about continuing to shop there. By comparison, for example, Target clothing gets a “D” and Macy’s gets an “F.”

The list isn’t exhaustive, but it’s a great start. Being conscientious of the impact we have on the world around us is incredibly important, and I want to do my part.

Kitten Heel

I just started showering before bed and not drying my hair, which has a million benefits, three of which I will outline here. First, no holding a heavy blow dryer above my head (I had bilateral shoulder reconstructions in college and if I can avoid overhead exercise, that’s always my first choice). Second, no heat damage. Third, I wake up with shiny curls. Um, what. Deadpan whyamIjustlearningthis face.

Shop this outfit:

Oversize faux fur stole: H&M Paris Collection (similar from TopShop) // Destroyed skinny ankle jeans: Paige Denim (great for long legs, want these for this winter) // Black silk button-up: MICHAEL Michael Kors (similar by Vince Camuto) // Wool coat: H&M // Patent kitten heels: Tahari via DSW (similar by Michael Kors, lust-worthy by Jimmy Choo) // Pavé link bracelet: BaubleBar // Cocktail ring: Nordstrom Rack // Leather tote: Coach // Glasses: Warby Parker, c/o contest // Red nail polish: Chanel 475 Dragon (so many gorgeous colors)

I helped my hair with some strategic curling iron tendrils to get this look, but this takes an estimated 0.01% of the effort I usually exert on my head every day. Be prepared for more of this, at least until I grow out my haircut (if that ever happens).

So, this outfit. Comfy. Simple. Quick. Good for getting back to work deadlines that require more attention. On that note, bye.

P.S. Kitten heels: good for getting things done, but still feeling like you’re wearing clackers.

French Connection

California winter may not be considered intense by most, but when the high is only 60°F, doubling up on jackets and adding a faux fur is necessary to keep me warm. Don’t ask me how I handled Midwest winters as a college swimmer, literally walking almost a mile across campus with wet hair in negative temperatures. I don’t know. I was ridiculous.

Shop this outfit:

Fitted puffer jacket: French Connection via Piperlime // Black day jacket: Dolce & Gabbana, vintage via Encore in Burlingame, CA // Black v-neck: J.Crew // Waxed denim: Target (old, amazing J Brand option here) // Faux fur stole: H&M (last year) // Nude pumps: Nine West via Piperlime // Black tote: Coach // Men’s watch: Akribos // Cocktail ring: Nordstrom Rack // Stud earrings: Target // Sunglasses: Dior // Red nail polish: Chanel 475 Dragon (found in-store)

I actually got a phone call about my old swimming team and how they were doing at the latest meets as we were doing this shoot, and my photog-husband just kept shooting. He’s getting better and better with photography, and was even just featured in SFGate as my official photographer. Proud of you, boo!

If you haven’t noticed the Parisian theme going here lately, I’ll fill you in: I would like a vacation and a somehow gluten- and dairy-free croissant stat, please.

This evening, le hubs and I were celebrating our first real peek into summertime at our new place on our big balcony. Date night at home, just the two of us and our puppies, is one of my favorite things in the world.

It took a long time – two months – but I am so happy to be back in my groove. Mono seemed to stick around forever, and I am not sorry to see that jerk officially leaving town. Cramped my style in every way. How rude.

White Vegan Leather

Sarah's Ambitions | White Vegan Leather Sarah's Ambitions | White Vegan Leather

White vegan leather dress: Tinley Road via Piperlime (now on sale!) // Aqua chain link necklace: c/o Glam Grab (and seriously eyeing their Glam Monogram collection) // Dainty aqua bracelet: H&M

Woohoo, I’m baaack! It was an unfortunate series of events, Mr. Snicket: we moved out of our Pacifica apartment rather unexpectedly (read: fire balls in the living room and sewage in the bathroom – seriously) and had just gotten our furniture into our new place when I was diagnosed with mononucleosis. Oh, hai, illness I have forgotten existed since high school, BRB after I make plans to accommodate you in my twenty-something life with Bay Area rent and car payments and puppies and marriage.

Stop the (digital) presses, this #getitgirl needed some major shut-eye. I was operating on a schedule of work for 3 hours, nap for three hours, work for three hours, nap for three hours . . . well, I am happy to report I am no longer perma-PJ’d and have regained some color in my cheeks!

Can you tell how much we love our new apartment from these photos?  I now have my own office and am in the midst of decorating it. I can’t wait to share it on the blog – I still need to find some art and am waiting on a #megachic rug to arrive. Having my own work space has proven to be incredibly beneficial for my creativity and focus and I fully intend on making the most of every minute! You know, #getitgirl style.

Pastel Pink

Sarah's Ambitions - Pale Pink - shorts chic outfit Sarah's Ambitions - Pale Pink - shorts chic outfit Sarah's Ambitions - Pale Pink - shorts chic outfit

Pink tank: Zara // White blazer: H&M // Black faux leather shorts: Zara (I seriously own two identical pairs; total must-have staple piece!) // Handbag: Michael Kors Hamilton // Bow flats: Ivanka Trump via Nordstrom // Ring necklace: H&M // Pyramid ring: Forever21 // Mirrored rose sunglasses: H&M // Pink lipgloss: “Smooth Talker” c/o BareMinerals

I wore this outfit for a day of working at a local café, where I got some real sunshine for the first time in a long time. It was deliciously warm and entirely addictive. The weather in San Francisco (and the neighboring city where I live, one step farther down the coast) is often a bit too chilly and a bit too cloudy for this sunbaby’s liking, so the fact that one can drive 25 minutes and be tomando las rayas del sol is perfection. I took in those rays like there was no tomorrow . . . but then I came back again the next day and fully plan to again and again. Claaaaro que sí. Of course.

Last week, I attended a BareMinerals event all about moxie – a concept I love. They sent me home with some beautiful lip glosses, and this “Smooth Talker” is the perfectly pastel pink for a punchy, confident little beauty boost. Its slightly minty-fresh tingle and sheer, no-nonsense hue had my moxie at full force all day long. Perfect for the #getitgirl!

The New Boardroom Chic

Jumpsuit: Vince via Nordstrom Rack // White blazer: H&M // Sandal heels: Zara // Handbag: Michael Kors Astrid Satchel // Aviators: c/o Ellison Sunglass Co. // Pavé triangles necklace: H&M, part of a set // Black pavé bracelet: Target // Gemstone bracelet: Forever21 // Men’s watch: Invicta

I wore this modified suit for a day of client meetings and delivering completed projects. There is nothing quite as fulfilling as creating something unique that gets the people going. When I think back on the career I’d set my sights on through college – saving America’s health care – I am so grateful that I changed course, even though it meant building something from nothing and some restless nights. Now, I get to explore creative options and create exciting projects, and I love it. Having my blog on the side to feed my passions, too, is amazing. #ilovetheinternet

Making a new boardroom for myself is so exciting. And speaking of new things, these strappy Zara heels were my first shoe purchase from them and I am in love. Can’t wait to rock them every day when it warms up more.

Cherry Blossom Spring

Drop-waist peplum: H&M. White pencil skirt: Banana Republic. Faux leather moto: Target. Pointed bow flats: Invanka Trump via Nordstrom. Handbag: Michael Kors Astrid satchel. Triangle necklace: H&M. Round sunglasses: Target. Gem bracelet: Forever21. Men’s watch: Invicta.

Living in California has a million benefits, one of them being early spring. When the cherry tree blossoms appear, it feels like a new lease on the year and I love it. I’ve been doing some major spring cleaning around my apartment (decorating details on the blog soon!) and in my life (chao, clutter and chaos), and it feels amazing.

This drop-waist peplum is so my jam. The fit is extra comfortable, and I like the way it pairs with a pencil skirt for a client meeting, how I wore it in these photos. I’m also planning on rocking it with boyfriend jeans or a pair of leather leggings for a more casual look.

Happy spring-ing!

Big Hearts Forever

Sarah's Ambitions - Big Hearts ForeverSarah's Ambitions - Big Hearts ForeverSarah's Ambitions - Big Hearts Forever

Dress: Theory via Nordstrom Rack. Faux leather moto: Target. Handbag: Michael Kors Astrid Satchel. Kitten Heels: Tahari via DSW. Perfume necklace: H&M. Men’s watch: Invicta. LOVE ring stack and gem bracelet: Forever21.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope everyone had a day filled with love and celebration of the most powerful thing on Earth. There are people who scoff at the holiday and say it’s fabricated, but really, what in life isn’t? We add “artificial” importance to every day: the Earth orbits and spins whether or not you follow tradition A or B, and whether you wore your PJs all day or donned something that makes you feel oh-so-fabulous. Why not celebrate love every day? It doesn’t matter if you’re attached or not.

“I have an everyday religion that works for me. Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.” – Lucille Ball

If you didn’t treat yourself yesterday, do it today. And tomorrow. And the day after that!

People with big hearts always win in the long run. So let’s all open ours and make the most of this wild ride around the sun. Let other people in. Let people out when they hurt you. I’ve recently had to do that a few times, and while it aches at first, everything gets better with time (especially wine).

Except cellulite. That stuff finds you out of nowhere, and I am here to tell you that more people need to let a girl know that it happens to almost everyone, no matter size. And yep, you’re still beautiful.

Sparkle + Stripes

Striped top with sequins: Target. Faux ostrich skirt: H&M. Glasses: Zagg frames c/o Warby Parker contest. Rope and gold necklace: Target. Men’s watch: Invicta, borrowed from le hubs. Gem bracelet: Forever21 (similar).

I love wearing pieces that are more comfortable than they seem. This outfit is full of sneakily snuggly sparkles, which this Monday definitely needed. I’m so glad that I won these Warby Parker Zagg glasses over the holidays thanks to a Twitter contest – they give my eyes a much-needed break from contacts and I love the shape and their social responsibility factor.

Our internet went out over the weekend, and I didn’t mind terribly much because I was having a great time weekend-ing with some lovely people. We tried all the troubleshooting tricks for two days to cure those misbehaving signal ourselves, but ended up with an 8 AM Monday morning time window for Comcast. There are few things I want to do at 8 AM anymore, let alone cross my fingers that someone comes to bring the world back into my apartment. So, do you know the cure for the Monday morning blues? The Monday navy-blues-with-sequins-sparkle-stripes-and-a-favorite-fuzzy-skirts. It’s the truth, mate. Ahoy, into the week!

I just love the internet. Hit me full force and let me sail off into your dreamy sea full of possibility. (We’re back in business, baby.)
